At a distance of 58 km from Guwahati Railway Station, Chandubi Lake is a natural lake located in Kamrup district of Assam. Situated at the foothills of Garo hills, it is one of the beautiful lakes in Assam and among the best places to experience Guwahati Tourism.
Chandubi Lake was formed in 1897 during the devastating earthquake in Assam. According to the locals, Chandubi was a hilly area with five mountains before 1897. The five mountains had sunken into the ground during the earthquake and form the lake. The name Chandubi is derived from two words where Chand means five and Dubi means sinking in Khasi language. The lake is measured to be as deep as 8 metres and the area is around 448 hectare.
Surrounded by deep forests, small villages, and mesmerizing tea gardens, Chandubi Lake is considered an ideal spot for a picnic amidst nature. The chief attraction of the lake is the natural lagoon that has been formed in the lake. The lake offers fishing and rowing in the lake for visitors. It is also a bird watchers paradise as it attracts large number of migratory birds during winter.
The local Rabha community has embraced the opportunity to develop the lake into a popular tourist destination with boat rides and angling on offer for tourists. A few resorts have also come up in and around the area where one can go camping and trekking.There is also one tribal village on the other side of the lake. A visit to the village will help one understand the culture and lifestyle of the ethnic community.
Chandubi festival is the major festival celebrated at the lake which is held in the first week of January every year. During this week long festival, local villagers perform their traditional or cultural dance forms, and stalls offer local traditional food. October to March is the ideal time to visit this lake.
