At a distance of 52 km from Shimla, Chail Sanctuary is a reserve forest area located at Chail. It is one of the top places to visit near Shimla, especially for nature lovers, and wildlife enthusiasts.

Covers an area of around 110 sq. km, Chail Wildlife Sanctuary was designated as a protected area by the government in 1976. The sanctuary initiated a breeding and rehabilitation program for the cheer pheasant in 1988. It features extensive oak and deodar forests, covering over 10,000 hectares.

According to people from Himachal Pradesh, the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is believed to be the main attraction in Chail. The sanctuary is home to various mammals, including rhesus macaques, leopards, Indian muntjacs, and crested porcupines. Additionally, other species such as the Himalayan black bear, wild boar, common langur, sambar, and black-naped hare inhabit the area. The former Maharaja of Patiala introduced European red deer approximately fifty years ago; however, a survey conducted in 1988 revealed that none had been sighted.

While there are no designated entry points to the sanctuary, visitors can participate in guided tours to explore the wildlife and observe animals in their natural environments. The sanctuary's picturesque landscapes offer excellent opportunities for hiking and trekking, providing stunning views and a chance to appreciate the natural beauty. Birdwatchers will find the sanctuary's variety of migratory and local bird species particularly appealing.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is open year-round, but the optimal time for wildlife exploration is from March to October, when visitors are more likely to encounter a diverse array of animals, birds, and the lush forest teeming with various flora.
