At a distance of 17 km from Shimla, Himalayan Nature Park is a zoological park situated in the outskirts of Kufri near Shimla. Popular known as 'Kufri Zoo', it is one of the best places to visit in Shimla.
Nestled amidst verdant Himalayan Landscape, the Himalayan Nature Park was established in the year 1992. Since 1965, the area used to be a Musk Deer Farm managed with the objectives to breed musk dear in captivity, to study its behavior, and to conduct research on methods to extract musk without causing injury to the animal. The altitude of the park varies from 2,350 m to 2,730 m. The site renowned for its ski slopes is a natural habitat of rich flora and fauna with about 140 species.
Spread over an area of 90 hectares, the Zoo has been divided into two sections for the better management of the animals. Section I comprises of Musk deer, Barking deer, Himalayan Tahr, Goral, and Sambar while Section II comprises of Black Bear, Brown Bear, Leopard, Leopard cat, Himalayan griffon, and Pheasants. The park also houses 'Monal', the State bird of Himachal Pradesh, also an endangered Himalayan species. There are 17 open enclosure and 3 cages for the display of these animals. These open enclosures have been provided with adequate protection to animals against natural climatic variations, fulfilling the individual needs like night sheds, caves, trees, shrubs, logs, etc.
