At a distance of 8 km from Agumbe Bus Station and 50 km from Udupi, Onake Abbi Falls is a beautiful waterfall located near Agumbe. It is one of the stunning waterfalls in Karnataka and among the top Agumbe Tourist Places.
Onake Abbi is one of the many waterfalls that Nature has bestowed on this place. The waterfall derives its name from the word 'Onake', that refers to a long pole that is used to grind species in the local Kannada language. There is only one branch in the falls and it is like 'onake', hence the name. The fall is cascading down from a height of around 500 feet and is one of the tallest waterfalls that can be seen on the Western Ghats belt. The summit of the trek offers a breathtaking view of the entire waterfall and the surrounding dense jungle.
It can only be reached through trekking of 5 to 6 km from Agumbe. The evergreen forest on the way is breath-taking and animals like Sambhar, mouse deer, and civet cat can be spotted sometimes. There are two routes that can be used to reach the destination. One is while coming from Agumbe Bus Stand towards Agumbe checkpoint, you will see on the right side a small arch written as''Oushadeeya Sasya Vana'. Just start in that road from the arch and that is the single road that will take you to the falls (No turns).
The second route is from the Agumbe check-point. There is a small park located there and at the end of the park, there is a sign which says, 'Onake Abbi Jalapathakke Charana Hadi' in Kannada. If you start from here you will join the first path, midway. There is no clear path here, you have to find the traces of the used path and follow the same. If you are new to forests and trekking, then this path is not for you! Visitors have to walk around 4 km in the mud road. Approximately 200 meters before the falls, there are steps to go down. Once you clear the steps, you will be able to see the spectacular sight of the Onake Abbi falls.
Visitors are required to take permission for trekking from the Forest Department. One can contact either the DFO of Shimoga District or the RFO of Megaravalli. Don't forget to take some food and water with you because there are no shops. Beware of leeches.
