At a distance of 10 km from Ramanagara, and 56 km from Bangalore, Kanva Reservoir is an artificial lake situated near Ramanagara in Karnataka. It is one of the popular dams in Karnataka, and among the best places to visit near Bangalore for a day trip.
Kanva Reservoir was formed by the damming of the Kanva River in an irrigation project. It was built in 1946 across the Kanva River, a tributary to the Kaveri River. Covers 776 hectares, the dam was built for irrigation, and to organize the Siphon Spillway flood arrangement chiefly designed by Sir M Vishweshwarayya. Later, the loveliness of the place turned it into a wonderful location. Sage Kanva Maharshi, lived in the caves of the mountains and forests near to this place, as mentioned in Ramayana hence it is named Kanva.
The reservoir is surrounded by wooded hills and offers good birdwatching. This place has been very popular among travelers who are fond of adventurous trekking or camping in the wild. Camping at the Kanva Reservoir will surely add to your memory as the cool breeze, the starry nights, and the greenery all over with moonlight all across the glazing night sky is a fantastic experience. The place is also known for the breathtaking sunrise that you'll love to witness over and over again.
There is a fisheries training and research center near the dam, which was established to train the locals in fish farming so that they could become economically independent. One can also visit the cave temple of Purushotthama Thirtha Gavi, which is about 3 km from the reservoir.
