At a distance of 36 km from Marayoor, 50 km from Pollachi and 91 km from Coimbatore, Amaravathi Dam is an earthen dam located at Amaravathi Nagar in Tamil Nadu. Situated inside Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, it is one of the popular places to visit near Marayoor and among the must include places in Coimbatore Tour Packages.
Surrounded by Annamalai Hills & Palani Hills, Amaravathi Dam was built in 1957 CE across the Amaravathi River. The reservoir is 9.31 sq. km in area and 110 feet deep. The dam was built mainly for irrigation and flood control. Now, the dam is used for generating four megawatts of electricity. There is also a well laid-out park with steps going up to the dam.
The dam is notable for the significant population of mugger crocodiles living in its reservoir and catchment basin. One can also visit the Amaravathi Sagar Crocodile Farm located in the dam vicinity and is a must-visit as it is the biggest crocodile nursery in India. Set up way back in 1976, it has about 100 crocodiles. Many adult crocodiles have been reintroduced from here into the wild. Eggs are collected from wild nests along the perimeter of the reservoir to be hatched and reared at the farm.
