At a distance of 16 km from Ponmudi Bus Station, Kallar Meenmutty Waterfalls is a magnificent waterfall located at Kallar village near Ponmudi, Kerala. It is one of the beautiful waterfalls near Trivandrum, and among the must-visit tourist places in Ponmudi.
Surrounded by the mountain ranges of Western Ghats, Meenmutty waterfall is a small waterfall formed over the Kallar River. Although the waterfall is pretty small in terms of height, the place gives a glimpse of natural beauty that attracts a large number of tourists every year as part of Ponmudi holiday packages. Numerous small natural pools are peppered near this magnificent waterfall. One can find many attractive, round-shaped boulders and bright colored pebbles in the pools.
This serene view of water cascading from the golden peak of Ponmudi on the Western Ghats could be seen only after you take a long walk through the tropical woods. The 2-3 km trek begins downstream at the Kallar Village that takes around 1 hour. Reaching the place itself is a great pleasure as one has to walk through the trail, flanked by gigantic trees with their looping branches and roots forming a green canopy by themselves. For most of the trail, the stream keeps you company and there are multiple entry points to the waterbody, where you can take a dip but be careful as the rocks are very slippery. On the way to the waterfall, one would come across rare birdlife and many species of butterflies.
Visitors are barred from getting too close to the falls, but you can take in the beauty of the cascading water from a safe distance. The best time would be from mid-November to March when the sky is clear and the trail not too slushy.
