It is one of the popular places to visit in India, and among the major places to visit as part of Madhya Pradesh tour packages.
Situated on the north bank of the Tapti River, Burhanpur is a fabulous destination that tourists love visiting, especially historians and art lovers due to its rich past and significant history. This city is named after Sheikh Burhan-ud-din, who was a popular medieval Sufi Saint. The most interesting fact about Burhanpur is that Mumtaz Begum, the beloved wife of Shah Jahan died here while giving birth to her fourteenth child. Besides, the city was also known as the entry point into south India as a result of its strategic location. According to history, Burhanpur was a prominent city under the Rashtrakuta Dynasty from 753 to 982 AD. It came to prominence when Malik Nasir Khan, the Faruqi dynasty Sultan of Khandesh, took over the region at the behest of Shaikh Zainuddin and renamed the city as Burhanpur after the saint Sheikh Burhan-ud-din. It became the capital of the Khandesh sultanate. Later, Miran Adil Khan II (reigned 1457-1501), another sultan of this dynasty, built a citadel and several palaces in Burhanpur. During his long reign, Burhanpur was transformed into a major center for trade and textile production.
The city was annexed by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1601 and the Mughals ruled over the place for a very long time. It was also the favourite destination of Emperor Shah Jahan, who has contributed many structures to the area. In 1705, Santaji Ghorpade, the chief general of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Rajaram attacked Burhanpur, and again in 1720, Peshwa Bajirao attacked and took over the city but they lost it in 1761 in the Third Battle of Panipat. At the downfall of the Maratha Empire, the city was given to Maratha Sardar Holkar, Scindia, and then finally in 1818 was handed over to the British by the Marathas. It is one of the top places to visit near Indore.
The city was ruled by Shah Jahan for a very long period and is one of the most beautiful symbols of Mughal architecture and grandeur. The city is blessed with many mosques, tombs, Gurudwaras, forts, and gardens that make sure that it offers the best holidaying experience for all tourists. Also, the fame of Burhanpur largely depends on pilgrimage for Bohra Muslims as well as for Sikhs as the city has an equal number of mosques and Gurudwaras. Accommodation facilities in Burhanpur are limited to a few budget hotels and guest houses, maintained by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department. The city has a less number of hotels as most of the tourists, who visit this place, prefer to stay in nearby big cities like Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior.
The best time to visit Burhanpur is during the months of October-March when the weather is pleasant and suitable for roaming around the city. It gets quite hot here during the summers, hence it would not be a preferable time to visit this place. Do avoid the rainy season as the town experiences heavy rainfall which might hinder the sightseeing.
