At a distance of 4 km from Indore Junction, Lal Bagh Palace is a historical royal building located in the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Located in the Nai Duniya locality, it is one of the important heritage sites in Madhya Pradesh, and among the top Indore tourist places.
Situated on the banks of the Saraswati River, the Lal Bagh Palace is one of the most iconic buildings of the Holkar era. This three-story structure was built by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar between 1886 and was completed 35 years later, by his successor Tukoji Rao Holkar in 1921. The prime reason behind the construction of this building was to facilitate comfortable meetings between the key personalities of the kingdom, and for hosting royal receptions. It was the residence of the ruling Holkar dynasty till 197.
Sprawling over 28 acres, the majestic Lal Bagh Palace allows the visitor to glimpse the lavish lifestyle of the Holkar rulers. Hugely influenced by the European style of architecture, the palace bears a striking resemblance with the Buckingham Palace. The interior of the palace features Italian marble columns, grand chandeliers, rich Persian carpets, flying nymphs on the ceiling, Belgium stained glass windows, Greek mythological reliefs, Italian-style wall paintings, stuffed leopards, tigers which further add to the charm of the palace. This palace also houses a ballroom, which has a wooden floor mounted on springs for extra bounce. A noteworthy feature of Lal Bagh Palace is the use of elevators in those times to deliver food to the dining halls. The palace complex is also believed to have one of the best rose gardens of India during its prime.
This grand royal residence is now more of a museum, that keeps some of the most exquisite artifacts of the Maratha Empire and the Holkar dynasty on the ground floor. Also, there is a coin collection on the first floor which dates back to the Mughal period.
