Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari (Film City), Mumbai - Timings, Best time to Visit

At a distance of 37 km from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Film City, officially known as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, is an integrated film studio complex located in Aarey Colony of Goregaon East, Mumbai. It is one of the must-include places in Mumbai Darshan Packages.

Established in 1977 by the Government of Maharashtra, Film City was created to offer support and resources to the film industry. The initiative was developed under the leadership of notable filmmakers V. Shantaram, B. R. Chopra, and Dilip Kumar. In 2001, it was renamed Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari to honor Dadasaheb Phalke, who is widely recognized as the pioneer of the Indian film industry.

Covering an area of over 520 acres, Film City boasts 42 outdoor shooting sites and 16 sound stages. Often referred to as the home of Bollywood, it features a variety of settings, including permanent structures for temples, prisons, courts, villages, gardens, and picnic areas, along with artificial waterfalls, lakes, and mountains. This facility has served as a key filming location for numerous Hindi and Marathi films.

Modeled after California's Film City, it has become synonymous with Bollywood. More than 900 films and countless television shows have been produced here. Today, Film City is recognized as one of the premier film studios, equipped with essential amenities and world-class facilities. It not only serves as an excellent venue for film production but is also surrounded by lush greenery and expansive open spaces.

Since 2014, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has initiated guided tours of Film City to enhance tourism. These tours provide visitors with a glimpse into the studio's operations and filming sites.
