Ghoradeshwar Caves, Pune - Timings, History, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 29 km from Pune, the Ghoradeshwar Caves, also known as Ghorawadi caves are ancient Buddhist caves located at Shelarwadi. It is one of the famous heritage sites near Pune.

Locally known as Shelarwadi caves, the Ghoradeshwar Caves are a small group of rock-cut excavations that date back to the 3rd century AD. Perched atop a hill close to the old Mumbai-Pune highway, this site features over 40 excavations, including 28 cisterns designed for rainwater storage. However, there are just three caves that are worthy of any serious attention. Initially established as Buddhist caves, they now showcase intricate carvings and statues representing both Buddhist and Hindu deities.

The Ghoradeshwar Temple is the main cave that houses a Shiv Linga, and is still an active place of worship. Many devotees of Lord Shiva visit the Ghoradeshwar Temple during the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. Additionally, one of the other caves in the complex is dedicated to Lord Vitthal and Goddess Rukmini, while another cave features an idol of Sant Tukaram, a venerated Hindu saint and poet from the 17th century, who is believed to have meditated at these caves.

To access the Ghoradeshwar Temple, visitors must ascend approximately 350 steps. The trek is relatively easy, taking around 30 minutes to reach the summit from the base of the hill. The hilltop offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts. Furthermore, the gentle breeze and cool climate at the top provide a refreshing experience.
