At a distance of 28 km from Pune, Malhargad is a hill fort situated near Saswad, Maharashtra. It is one of the hill forts built by Marathas in the Sahyadri mountains, and among the best trekking places near Pune.
Malhargad was built by Bhivrao Yashvant and Krishnaji Madhavrao Panse, a Peshwa Sardar, who was the chief in charge of Tofkhana of the Peshwas between 1757 and 1760. It was named after the god Malhari and was the last fort built by the Marathas. The fort is believed to be built to keep watch on Dive ghat along the Pune-Saswad route. In comparison to other Maratha forts in the Sahyadri Mountain Ranges, Malhargad Fort is relatively smaller. It is also referred to as Sonori Fort, named after the village located at its base.
Malhargad Fort is situated on a triangular hill plateau within the Bhuleshwar Range of the Sahyadris. The fort is encircled by tall stone wall ramparts and comprises a square-shaped fortress, remnants of a palace, several wells, a water tank, a temple dedicated to Lord Mahadev, and another temple dedicated to goddess Malhari. Additionally, a heritage structure, a palace belonging to the Panse Family, is located in the base village of Sonori.
Similar to other hill forts, Malhargad Fort is renowned for trekking and serves as a popular destination for a quick escape. The trek to Malhargad Fort is relatively easy, making it accessible for both beginner and intermediate trekkers. There are two starting points available for trekkers: Sonori Village and Zhendewadi Village. The ascent from either location typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
