At a distance of 36 km from Alwar, Bhartrihari Temple is a revered Hindu temple in Alwar. Located near Sariska National Park, it is one of the top pilgrimage sites near Jaipur, and among the must include places in Alwar packages.

Bhartrihari Temple is more than thousands years old and indeed a prime attraction of Alwar. This temple is the resting place of Baba Bhartrihari, also referred to as Yogi Bhartrihari Nath, a prominent figure in Indian history and mythology. He was a poet, philosopher, and ruler of the Ujjain kingdom during the 1st century BCE. Legend has it that Baba Bhartrihari chose to bury himself alive at this location, leading to the construction of the temple on his burial site.

According to the folklore, Bhartrihari Baba left his empire and became a saint. After so many years, he returned to his wife and requested her for Bhiksha. The queen gave him a fruit that he had it and turned immortal. While another story says, Raja Bharthari while returning from hunting saw a woman surrendering her life by jumping into her husband's fire. Maharaja Bharthari got captivated and wanted to test his wife's devotion as well. So, next time he went to the jungle for hunting, a messenger carried back news of his death to Rani Pingala. She expired on hearing the news itself. When King Bharthari came to know this, he got devastated. In his grief, he gave up the worldly amenities and became a monk. The king then became a follower of Guru Gorakhnath and meditated here in Rajasthan.

The shrine is built in the traditional Rajasthani style with spacious corridors, exquisite arches, and floral columns of mandaps.A visit to this temple is said to be a powerful experience and you might even find your deepest wishes granted by saint Bhartrihari. Some believe that Bhartrihari had saintly powers and can cure even the most fatal of diseases. There is also a Dhuni, which keeps burning throughout the year. Tourists can also visit the popular Sariska National Park, which is located nearby.

The annual Bhartrihari Mela, celebrated after the Amavasya in the Bhadrapada month (usually September), is a special occasion when a large number of devotees gather to honor Bhartrihari Baba through prayers and rituals.
