Thirumanancheri Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple, Kumbakonam - Timings, History, Darshan, Pooja Timings

At a distance of 26 km from Kumbakonam, Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple, also known as Udhvaganathar Temple is a Hindu temple at Thirumanancheri in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the famous places to visit as part of Kumbakonam leisure packages.

Thirumanancheri Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, revered here as Udhvaganathar, alongside his consort Kokhila Amman. This temple was constructed by Sembiyanman Devi during the Chola dynasty and is recognized as one of the 276 Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams, celebrated in the early medieval Tevaram hymns composed by the Tamil Saivite saints Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar. The temple is counted as one of the temples built on the banks of River Kaveri.

According to the legend, Goddess Parvathi was cursed by Lord Shiva to live as a cow on earth. Upon arriving at this location, she prayed to Lord Vishnu, who restored her to her original form. Subsequently, Lord Shiva visited the site and remarried her, with the blessings of Lord Vishnu and other deities. This event led to the naming of the location as Thirumanancheri, which translates to the site of the marriage.

The temple is renowned for its remarkable architecture and intricate sculptures that illustrate various scenes from the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. A prominent feature is the five-tiered gopuram at the entrance, embellished with vibrant and detailed carvings. Additionally, the temple houses a spacious and beautifully designed mandapam, where the principal deities are enshrined. A sacred tank, known as Kalyana Theertham, is also present, where devotees traditionally bathe before entering the temple.

The temple is particularly noted for its 'Kalyana Pooja,' a special ritual for individuals seeking a life partner, as it is believed that the divine couple grants blessings for early and successful marriages to those who perform the puja and receive the prasadam. Each year, especially during the auspicious months of Thai and Maasi, many visitors flock to this site. In addition to major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and Karthigai Deepam, the temple attracts large crowds throughout the year.
