At a distance of 500 m from Mahabalipuram Bus Stand, the Kotikal or Kodikkal Mandapam is an ancient rock-cut temple situated in Mahabalipuram. It is one of the most prominent places to visit in Mahabalipuram.
Situated atop the hill between Koneri Lake and Varaha Mandapa, there exists a rock-cut structure referred to as the Dharmaraja Throne or Yudhisthira's Rock Cut Throne. Although commonly called a throne, it is more accurately described as a couch. This stone platform measures 10 feet in length and 3.5 feet in width, carved from a natural rock outcrop, and is spacious enough to accommodate individuals of considerable height and girth. A notable feature of this couch is the sculpture of a seated lion, standing 18 inches tall, which serves as a cushion. According to local tradition, this throne was utilized by Dharmaraja, also known as Yudhisthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, during their period of exile.
Adjacent to this rock-cut throne, one can find a round-shaped cistern, also carved from rock. Located in front of the Trimurti Cave-temple, this small well-like structure likely served a practical purpose, such as collecting rainwater for the sculptors and artisans engaged in the creation of various monuments in the area. However, local legends suggest that it was used by Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, for her bathing rituals.
