At a distance of 800 m from Mahabalipuram Bus Stand, the Koneri Mandapam is an ancient rock-cut temple situated in Mahabalipuram. It it is one of the most prominent places to visit as part of Mahabalipuram luxury packages.
This west-facing Koneri Mandapam derives its name from the adjacent Koneri tank. It features two excavations positioned side by side; one remains largely unfinished, while the other is more developed. Access to the temple is provided by a series of rock-cut steps, leading to a front facade that is set back slightly from the top of the staircase. The excavation is in form of a mandapa, divided into an ardha mandapa and a mukha-mandapa by two rows of pillars. The front section, above the overhanging cornice, is adorned with kudu-arches and small shrines.
Each row consists of four pillars and two pilasters, creating five bays and five entrances. The front row of pillars exemplifies the early Pallava style, typical of the Mahendravarman I era, featuring a square section at both the top and base, with an octagonal section in between. The inner row of pillars is cylindrical at the base, leading to a multi-faceted shaft that is slender and topped with a bulbous capital. The shaft is intricately decorated with designs of creepers and flowers.
Dedicated to Shiva, the Koneri Mandapam includes five cells (shrines) that are attached to the main hall. These cells are elevated above the hall floor and share a common platform. The three prominent cells-the central one and those at either end-project outward, while the remaining cells are recessed. Each cell features a rectangular niche in the rear wall, likely intended for a painted image. All cells are accompanied by their respective dvarapalas. Currently, the sanctuaries of this temple are devoid of any inscriptions or images.
