At a distance of 500 m from Mahabalipuram Bus Stand, the Maritime Heritage Museum is a museum situated near Mamallapuram Light House. It is one of the most famous tourist places in Mahabalipuram.
The Maritime Heritage Museum was established by D. Hemachandra Rao, a civil engineer who transformed his residence into a dedicated space for maritime heritage. Construction of the museum commenced in 2013 and was completed in 2015. True to its name, the Maritime Heritage Museum showcases models representing various aspects of marine heritage. This museum serves as a valuable resource for those interested in maritime history and culture, providing visitors with an engaging experience that highlights India's rich seafaring traditions.
The museum houses a wide range of artifacts including ancient ship models, navigational tools, and detailed sculptures that narrate the story of India's maritime legacy. Each item is displayed in a glass case, accompanied by its respective name. In addition to the ancient ships, there is a dedicated room featuring a full-scale dummy control panel of a submarine. The arrangement of gears and switches is meticulously organized in front of a dummy screen, with each component clearly explained and labeled. Visitors have the opportunity to interact with these displays, gaining insights into the operation of ships. The museum also features very old boats, including some of the earliest designs created by humanity, as well as ancient anchors used in maritime vessels. Furthermore, models of airplanes are exhibited within glass cabinets.
Beyond the impressive exhibits, the museum's remarkable architecture harmonizes with its coastal environment, making it an ideal location for photography and leisurely walks. The ocean views from the museum are truly stunning, providing a tranquil backdrop for exploration. Additionally, visitors can explore the nearby Lighthouse Heritage Museum, which showcases tools utilized in lighthouses and ships.
