At a distance of 14 km from Rameswaram Railway Station, the Gulf of Mannar is a protected area in the Indian Ocean. It is one of the must-include places in Rameswaram wildlife packages.

Designated as a Biosphere Reserve, the Gulf of Mannar stands out as one of the most biologically diverse coastal areas in mainland India. It holds the distinction of being the first Marine Biosphere Reserve in South and Southeast Asia, extending from Rameswaram to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. This region is recognized as one of India's four principal coral reef areas, alongside the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Gulf of Mannar has attracted the interest of conservationists even prior to the establishment of the Man and Biosphere (MAB) program by UNESCO in 1971. Due to its rich biodiversity, a portion of this area was designated as a Marine National Park by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1986, and subsequently, it was recognized as India's first Marine Biosphere Reserve by the Government of India in 1989.

Spanning approximately 10,500 square kilometers, this Marine Biosphere Reserve includes a series of 21 islands and the surrounding coral reefs off the coasts of the Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin districts, which constitute the core zone of the Marine National Park. Within its boundaries, the reserve is home to over 4,200 species of flora and fauna. Visitors to the Gulf of Mannar may encounter the globally endangered dugong, various species of dolphins and whales, as well as endangered sea turtles. Additionally, the Reserve supports populations of sea horses, numerous fish species, sea cucumbers, sponges, and a wide variety of corals. More than 290 bird species and 11 mangrove species can also be found on the islands within the reserve.

Access to the Park is permitted exclusively through glass-bottomed boat rides, which are available at Mandapam and Rameswaram. A visit to this park is highly recommended to appreciate the wonders of nature and to witness some of its remarkable creations.
