Kattu Azhagiya Singa Perumal Temple, Srirangam - Timings, History, Darshan, Pooja Timings

At a distance of 1.5 km from Srirangam Railway Station, and 9 km from Trichy, Kattu Azhagiya Singa Perumal Temple, or Kattu Narasimhaperumal Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the suburb of Srirangam, India. It is one of the ancient temples in Tamilnadu, and among the must-visit Srirangam tourist places.

Kattu Azhagiya Singa Perumal Temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha. The temple was built by the Pandyan King Vallabadevan in the 9th century CE. However as per legend, this temple dates back to a period prior to the Sri Ranganatha Temple when this Kshetram was referred to as Velli Thirumutham. It was only later, after the construction of the Ranganatha temple that it came to be known as Thiruvarangam. Some believe that the temple dates back to the 5th century CE. Although the temple is not mentioned in the Nalayira Divya Prabhandams and is not listed in the Divya Desam group of 108 temples, it is still considered one of the most important Abhimana sthalams.

The temple is also known as 'Ekaanthanthaman Koil,' which translates to 'calm and quiet ambience' temple. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, there is a magnificent 8 feet tall idol of Lord Narasimha in a seated position, facing the West, with Goddess Lakshmi seated on his left thigh. Devotees consider the idol to be swayambu. Initially, due to its location in the midst of a forest, the temple was considered unsafe, and the utsava murthy was kept inside the Koorathaazhvan Sannidhi in Srirangam Temple.

Special poojas and Thirumanjanam (sacred bath) are organized every month on the Swathi Nakshatram and Prathosham days. Additionally, Saturday is considered an auspicious day to visit the temple. While the temple remains open throughout the year, it is particularly crowded on Vijayadasami, the 10th day of the Navratri festival, when devotees from the entire region gather here. On the evening of Vijayadasami, the Utsavar of Srirangam temple, Namperumal, is taken in a palanquin on a street procession to this temple.
