At a distance of 1 km from Thanjavur Junction Railway Station, Thanjavur Museum is a museum located near Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur. It is one of the must-include places in Thanjavur heritage packages.
Commonly referred to as the Thanjavur Collector Office Museum, Thanjavur Museum serves as a significant representation of Thanjavur's rich cultural and historical heritage. The museum was established to conserve and display the region's legacy, providing visitors with insights into the artistic and historical importance of Thanjavur, which was once a prominent center of power during the Chola and Nayak dynasties.
The Thanjavur Museum is situated in a building that previously functioned as the District Collector's office in Thanjavur. Constructed approximately 120 years ago in 1900 by British architect Robert Chisol, the building exemplifies the Saracen architectural style. After the collector's office was moved, the district administration inaugurated the museum in 2023 as part of the Smart City initiative.
The museum features a varied collection of artifacts, including remarkable sculptures, ancient inscriptions, pottery, and coins, each telling a story of the region's history. Many of these exhibits originate from the renowned Chola period, showcasing the artistic excellence and cultural vibrancy that thrived during that era. Additionally, the museum displays ten geo-tagged objects from Thanjavur and various heritage items that highlight the cultural legacy of the Thanjavur district.
