At a distance of 500 m from Trichy Railway Station, the Rail Museum or Railway Heritage Centre is a museum situated in Trichy. It is one of the best tourist places to visit as part of Trichy tour.
The Rail Museum in Trichy was established in 2015 at a cost of approximately 1.35 crore. It showcases the railway history of South India through displays of artifacts, papers, and pictures from the region's railway past, as well as modern train equipment. This museum provides visitors with an intriguing journey through time, illustrating the development of railways in the region and throughout the country.
Spanning over 9000 square feet, the museum is a part of the former South Indian Railway's sesquicentennial celebrations. It features both indoor and outdoor exhibits that offer a glimpse into the early days of rail travel in India, highlighting the challenges and successes of building and expanding the railway network. The indoor exhibits include old documents, rare photographs, maps, gazettes, railway manuals, and books used during the British Raj, along with epoch artifacts such as old lamps made of China glass, clocks, bells, and staff badges.
One of the museum's main attractions is its impressive collection of steam engines, some of which date back to the British colonial era. These magnificent machines, with their intricate designs and powerful presence, serve as a reminder of a bygone era when steam locomotives dominated the railways. Visitors can also explore various types of railway carriages, including royal coaches used by Indian Maharajas and colonial officials, providing a glimpse into the lavish lifestyles of the past. Additionally, there is a fully functional toy train on the premises.
