The Vekkali Amman Temple is believed to have been established during the era of the Chola Dynasty in the village of Woraiyur. Historically, the Chola kings would offer their prayers to the goddess prior to embarking on military campaigns, seeking her favor for success. In their desperation, the villagers turned to their deity, Vekkali Amman, for assistance. Responding to their prayers, she appeased Thayumanavar, thereby safeguarding the village. Although the storm subsided, the villagers were left without shelter. In response, Vekkali Amman chose to reside in a roofless temple until the villagers could rebuild their homes. To this day, the main sanctum of Vekkali Amman remains open to the sky, and despite numerous attempts, a roof has not been constructed over it due to divine reasons.

Additionally, the temple houses a golden chariot that stands at a height of 9.75 feet, crafted from 10.5 kilograms of gold and 25 kilograms of silver. The management and upkeep of the temple are overseen by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
