At a distance of 3 km from Thiruvannamalai Bus Station, Sri Ramana Ashram, also known as Sri Ramanasramam, is an ashram in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. Nestled at the foothills of the sacred Arunachala Mountain, it is one of the sacred places to visit as part of Arunachalam tour packages.
Sri Ramana Ashram is a spiritual sanctuary dedicated to the teachings and presence of Sri Ramana Maharshi. From 1922 until his death in 1950, this was served as home to the revered sage and Advaita Vedanta master. At the heart of the ashram lies the Samadhi Shrine, where the mortal remains of Sri Ramana Maharshi are enshrined. People from all walks of life, be it devotees or pilgrims, come here to pay their respects.
The ashram stands as a testament to the timeless wisdom of Sri Ramana Maharshi. His teachings on self-inquiry, surrender, and inner peace continue to inspire spiritual seekers around the world. According to history, Ramana Maharshi settled in the ashram after the passing of his mother Alagammal in 1922. He initially settled near a Samadhi tree, and over time, the ashram expanded.
Since then, numerous eminent and influential personalities have visited the ashram. This includes British writer Paul Brunton, Writer W. Somerset Maugham, Swami Sivananda, Paramahansa Yogananda, Alfred Sorensen, and Wei Wu Wei. Niranjananda Swami, the younger brother of Ramana Maharshi, moved to the ashram with his mother in 1916 and remained there for the rest of his life. He took charge of managing the ashram, and later, his son and grandson continued to oversee its operations.
The Samadhi shrine of Maharshi Ramana remains a popular destination for devotees across India and beyond. The peaceful setting of the ashram offers an ideal space for individuals to engage in self-inquiry and meditation. Guests are encouraged to take part in various activities such as silent meditation sessions, bhajans, and discussions on Ramana Maharshi's teachings led by resident monks and visiting scholars.
