Established in the year 1981, the Ajman National Museum is housed in the Ajman Fort, one of the oldest functioning buildings in the UAE. The fort was built during the late 18th century and was also the first line of defence of Ajman. The fort served as the residence of Ajman's then-ruler, the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi and his family until 1970. Later, it was used as the emirate's police headquarters until 1978 and converted into a museum in 1981. The Manama Museum is housed in the White Fort, originally named Al Mareer Fort. The fort was built as a royal residence at the time of Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, who ruled the emirate from 1928 until 1981. It features a guard's tower and a well. The fort is surrounded by palm trees irrigated by the old falaj system that channels underground water from the mountains. The fort has been converted into a museum in the year 2012.
