At a distance of 15 km from Fujairah, Fort Hayl or Hail is an ancient fortress situated at Al Hayl village near Fujairah city of UAE. Located deep in its eponymous Wadi, in the heart of the Al Hajar Mountains, it is one of the oldest forts in the UAE and among the popular historical places to visit in Fujairah.
Also known as Al Hayl Castle, the Al Hayl Fort was built in the year 1830 on the west bank of the valley of Al Hail on a mountain rising about 40 m from the surface of the valley ground. At the beginning of the 20th century, the fort was used as the residence for the ruling family of Fujairah and has been significant in defending the area through regular patrolling and surveillance. The fort was then abandoned before being restored between 2006 and 2008 by the authorities.
There is not much left today as the original fortification was demolished long ago. But a two-level tower known as Al Hail square still remains on the hill. The tower will remind the visitors of an era when there were forts and various hillsides of the UAE. And after the fortress was demolished, Al Hail square was built during the reign of Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi a hill high up to about 15 m above ground level. It consists of two floors and the roof of the square was dedicated to the surveillance and defense through holes and platforms and Tarabeech. Gravel, burnt clay, wood veins, and palm leaves were used in the construction of the square and strong wood in the making of the ceilings.
Set amidst a panoramic vista of date palms and mountains, the place is a paradise for photographers. Although not very big in size, its wind towers offer a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
