At a distance of 6 km from Sharjah International Airport and 24 km from Dubai International Airport, the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum is a vintage car museum located on Airport Road between the 4th and 5th intersections. Situated next to Sharjah International Airport and opposite Sharjah Discovery Centre, it is one of the popular vintage car museums in the UAE and among the top places to visit in Sharjah.
The Sharjah Classic Car Museum first opened to the public in 2008, under the patronage of HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. It underwent a remarkable renovation and re-opened to the public in 2013. Attracting tourists and visitors from all over the world, this museum is an ideal destination for lovers of classic cars as it displays more than 100 vintage classic cars of different brands dating back to the early 20th century, in addition to classic motorcycles and bicycles.
The museum is divided into four sections - each represents a historical stage of development of the automotive industry. Here, visitors can learn about the different types of car engines and how they function. Each car will have a bit of information provided right next to the car. The information includes the year it was produced, the country that manufactured the car, a fun fact and even the car's top speed. More excitingly, the museum organizes interactive activities and experiments for all ages.
The first section Early Autos (1915-1939) showcases cars that have been manufactured from 1915 to 1939. Keep your eyes peeled for the black 1915 Dodge model - the oldest car in the museum. The Automobile Redefined (1940-1959) section display cars that marked the end of World War II. Here one can learn about American brands and about the first female race car drivers. There's even a car that was worth only 905 dollars back in the day.
At the New heights of Innovation (1960 to 1987) section, visitors can see the 1969 Mercedes Pullman Limousine, custom-made for Sharjah's ruler HH Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi and one of only 2,000 in the world. Also, look out for the Citroen D Special where the brake was a button instead of a pedal - a car that was way ahead of its time. The Large Vehicles and UAE Motoring showcases large four-wheel-drive vehicles and one can also learn about early UAE taxis. Here you can find the big 1957 Bedford, which was used in the UAE for military purposes.
