At a distance of 24 km from Sharjah International Airport and 44 km from Dubai International Airport, the Sharjah Maritime Museum is a museum situated adjacent to the Sharjah Aquarium in the Al Khan area of Sharjah. It is one of the top places to visit in Sharjah as part of the Dubai Tour Packages.
The Sharjah Maritime Museum first opened in the year 2003 in the Heritage Area of Sharjah to highlight the maritime life of the United Arab Emirates. However, due to the importance of the sea and its significance in the region's heritage, the museum was expanded and relocated to the Al Khan neighborhood in 2009. The museum exhibits a variety of artifacts that showcase how the sea played a key role in the growth of Sharjah's development and was the primary reason for the first settlers choosing this site over 6,000 years.
At Sharjah Maritime Museum, one can explore traditional wooden seafaring dhows, genuine Arabian pearl-diving vessels and the famous Asamaa, sambuk and jalbot ships earlier known for their thrilling seafaring adventures. Highlights include the collection of the genuine Arabian pearls collected by ancient inhabitants from the deep blue waters of the Gulf, and which still possess the same luster and glamour today as they did when they were first harvested. These were collected and admire a stunning specimen discovered by archaeologists in a coastal cemetery in Sharjah, which is believed to be one of the oldest known pearls in the world. The museum also reveals facts about the exciting diving world, the traditional fishing methods, as well as the trading and diving adventures in the olden days.
