The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization was first opened as the Islamic Museum in the Heritage Area in 1996. Later, its extensive collections were moved to the impressive building of the traditional Souq Al Majarrah, as directed by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi. The new Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization was opened to the public on 6th June 2008. The museum is a good place to dive into the deep roots of Arab and Islamic culture. A huge number of scientific and religious manuscripts are on display that speaks volumes about the cultural depth of Sharjah. The museum itself is an architectural masterpiece with golden yellow walls and a conspicuous globe. A stroll along its hallways and chamber is rewarding in its own way.

The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization exhibits more than 5,000 exquisite Islamic artifacts from all over the Islamic World. The two storyed museum comprises seven spacious galleries and display areas. The Abu Bakr Gallery of Islamic Faith is dedicated to the history and nature of Islam. It presents the five pillars of Islam, important principles of Islamic doctrine and a fascinating account of the Hajj or Islamic pilgrimage. It holds a collection of outstanding artifacts including monumental sections from the Kiswah, which covers the Kaaba in Makkah, rare historical Quran manuscripts as well as models, photographs, presentations and important facts about mosque architecture from all around the world.

The Ibn Al-Haytham Gallery of Science and Technology depicts some of the most influential Islamic scientific achievements, and the contributions the great Islamic scholars have made to enrich world civilization. Sophisticated three-dimensional models, audiovisuals and extensive information panels chart some of the most outstanding discoveries, inventions, and theories developed by Islamic scholars in all fields, including astronomy, medicine, geography, architecture, mathematics, chemistry, military technology, marine navigation, and engineering.

Four further galleries display Islamic art through the ages, as well as displays of modest fashion and contemporary pieces. The exhibits at these galleries include woodworks, ceramics, clay, glass, pottery, jewellery, weapons, textiles and handicrafts with silver, gold, and brass inlay work. A coin collection of silver dinars and dirhams from Abbasid and Omayyad eras as well as zodiac mosaic below the central dome are among the key highlights of the museum. The Al Majarrah Temporary Exhibition Gallery is the seventh gallery in the museum. In this gallery, the museum hosts temporary world-class exhibitions twice a year.
