At a distance of 18 km from Orchha, 99 km from Tikamgarh, 102 km from Gwalior, 179 km from Khajuraho, 235 from Kanpur, 314 from Lucknow, 342 km from Bhopal, 457 km from New Delhi and 500 km from Ujjain, Jhansi is a historical city lies in the region of Bundelkhand in the extreme south of Uttar Pradesh. Situated between Betwa and Pahunch Rivers, it is one of the top places to visit in Uttar Pradesh, and among the must-visit historical places as part of India tour packages.
Jhansi is regarded as the gateway to Bundelkhand region and also the administrative headquarters of Jhansi district. It is one of the top places to visit near Kanpur. Earlier known as Balwant Nagar, Jhansi was the seat of the Chandela dynasty and flourished under their rule. The region got its name from the fort built by Raja Bir Singh Deo, in 1613 CE, one of the must-include places in Jhansi tour packages. According to legend, the Bundela ruler could see only a shadow (Jhansi) of this fort on a distant hill and thus the fort and the region came to be known as Jhansi.
Jhansi lost its glory in 12th century CE but regained its grandeur during the 17th century CE under the rule of Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. Later, Jhansi came under the rule of Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundela of Panna, who gifted it to Peshwa Baji Rao I in 1729 CE. In the 18th century the town of Jhansi served as the capital of a Maratha province and later the Princely State of Jhansi from 1804 till 1853 CE. The state was annexed by the British Governor General in 1854 when Damodar Rao's claim to the throne was rejected but Rani Lakshmi Bai ruled it from June 1857 to June 1858. After the death of Lakshmi Bai in 1858, the British Government gave it to Jiyaji Rao Scindia and the city became the part of Gwalior. After India's independence, Jhansi became the part of Uttar Pradesh.
The artistic grandeur of the Chandela rulers is still evident in the monuments and other ancient structures standing in the city. Jhansi Fort, Rani Jhansi Museum, Parichha Dam, Rani Lakshmi Bai Park, Barua Sagar, Rani Mahal, and Cenotaphs of Gangadhar Rao are the top places to visit in Jhansi.
Jhansi Mahotsav is the most popular festival celebrated in Jhansi every year in February / March. This week long extravaganza is organized jointly by the Uttar Pradesh tourism board and the district administration of Jhansi. The yearly event showcases the cultural heritage of Jhansi through music recitals, dance performances and cultural events. Other festivals celebrated in the city are Diwali, Holi, and Janmastami.
