At a distance of 3 km from Kanpur Central, Kanpur Memorial Church is a Christian church located in Albert Lane near Cawnpore Club in Kanpur Cantonment. It is one of the oldest churches in India, and among the best historical places to visit in Kanpur.
Originally called All Soul's Cathedral, the Kanpur Memorial Church was built in 1875 in honor of the British who lost their lives during the Siege of Cawnpore in 1857. The church speaks of the massive massacre of Kanpur Barracks and the betrayal of Nana Sahib who after the incident was nicknamed as 'The Butcher of Cawnpore'. The church belongs to the Church of North India, a united Protestant denomination.
Kanpur Memorial Church was designed in Lombardic Gothic style by Walter Granville, a British architect of the East Bengal Railway. The building is made up of vibrant red bricks adorned in multi-colored hues. The interior of the church houses the heartbreaking memorial tables, epitaphs, and monuments that pay a tribute to those soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country. To the east of the church is the memorial garden that has a carved Gothic screen and a statue of an angel in its center with its arms crossed and holding pylons symbolizing peace for the world. It was built by a sculptor called Baron Carlo Marochetti.
