At a distance of 8 km from Lucknow Junction, Ambedkar Memorial Park is a beautiful public park located in the Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Initially known as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Prateek Sthal, it is one of the popular places to visit as part of Lucknow holiday packages.
Founded in 1995, the Ambedkar Memorial Park was formerly known as the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Udyan. It was constructed by the state government under the leadership of the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati. However, with further renovations in 2002, the Udyan came to be known as the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial. In 2007, the park underwent further renovation and was opened finally a full-fledged public space only in 2008.
Covering an area of 107 acres, the memorial is dedicated to B. R. Ambedkar, the 20th-century Indian polymath and the major author of the Indian Constitution. The park also houses memorials of Jyotirao Phule, Narayana Guru, Birsa Munda, Shahuji Maharaj, and Kanshi Ram. The entire monument is constructed using red sandstone brought in from Rajasthan with a cost of 7 billion INR. The place has several structures which add to the beauty of the park.
The Ambedkar Stupa is the main attraction situated at the center of the park. With the four entrances, the structure is built on the lines of a flower with four petals. The stupa houses a massive bronze structure of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in a seated position along with an engraving of the line 'My struggle of life is my only message' at the bottom. The sanctum sanctorum of the stupa hosts many statues of Ambedkar which depict his biography. One can also visit Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sangrahalay, which is constructed across an area of 2.5 acres. This museum has two dome-like structures atop it, and each dome holds statues belonging to different personalities including Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, Shri Narayana Guru, Gautam Buddha, Sant Ravi Das, Sri Birsa Munda, and Sant Kabir Das.
Pratibimb Sthal is the main entrance of the memorial which has 62 huge statues of elephants on either side of the path guarding the monument. If anyone touches the statues, they will be imposed a fine of Rs. 500. There is a huge central musical fountain towards the memorial's entrance. There is also a gallery that preserves various artifacts and documents crucial to Dr. Ambedkar, his life, and his importance in the freedom struggle along with several murals made out of bronze.
The other attraction of the park is the 80 ft tall pyramid structure which is named Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Drashya Sthal. It serves as a viewpoint from where one can see the entire memorial park. There is also constant water flowing from its pinnacle.
