At a distance of 7 km from Lucknow Junction, Hussainabad Clock Tower is an old clock located in the Hussainabad locality of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Locally known as Ghantaghar, it is the tallest clock tower in India, and among the must-visit places as part of the Lucknow Tour.
Hussainabad Clock Tower was constructed in 1881 by Nawab Nasir-ud-din Haider. Standing comfortably at a height of 221 feet, this imposing structure was built to mark the arrival of Sir George Couper, the first Lieutenant-Governor of the United Province of Awadh. Built at a cost of Rs.1.75 lakhs, it is located adjacent to the Rumi Darwaza, Bada Imambada, and Teele Wali Masjid. After being inoperative for 27 years, the clock of the tower was decided to be replaced in the year 2010 by the district administration of the region. However, Captain Paritosh Chauhan and Akhilesh Agarwal - two patrons, proposed to repair the clock to the administration. They worked for three years and finally, on 13th September 2011, they made the giant clock tower chime, after a silence of 27 long years.
Richard Roskell Bayne designed this 67 m (220 ft) clock tower and it reflects Victorian and Gothic style structural designs. It was built as a replica of the Big Ben clock tower of London. Gunmetal is used for building the clock parts. Its gigantic pendulum has a length of 14 feet, and the dial of the clock is shaped like a 12-petalled flower encircled with bells. Also famous for its golden bird which is on the top that shows the wind directions.
