At a distance of 5 km from Allahabad Railway Station, Madan Mohan Malaviya Park or Minto Park is a lush green park situated along the banks of the Yamuna river in Pragyaraj. It is one of the well-maintained parks in Allahabad and among the must-visit Allahabad tourist places.
Minto Park is a historical site where Earl Canning read out the declaration of Queen Victoria's Proclamation which resulted in the complete transfer of control over India from The East India Company to the government of Britain in 1858. This declaration was made as a precaution after the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. The British government felt that one of the reasons for the mutiny was the ever-evident corruption in the East India Company.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the event Earl of Minto installed a proclamation pillar in 1908. The park came to be known after him. The marble pillar was topped with the busts of Queen Victoria and Edward VII. After independence, the marble busts atop the pillar were replaced by the Ashokan Lion Capital and the park is renamed Madan Mohan Malaviya Park.
The entrance of the park is very impressive with a large gate and two pillars on either side. The park is well maintained with plants and tall trees. There are also gardens with beautiful flowers that charm the visitors. If you would like to have an evening walk or a jog in the morning, this is the right place. Many people come with family to spend their time here. Although a relatively much smaller park, it hosts lush greenery alongside seating facilities. There are also a few tea shops in the park vicinity.
